The 2011 vintage started off so well, vintners initially thought it might surpass 2010 in terms of quality. Winter months saw below zero temperatures that serve to rid the vineyards of parasites and possible diseases. Spring months were ideal and growth was pushed along at healthy levels thanks to beautifully warm June temperatures. Weather conditions were perfectly on track to guarantee a successful growing cycle until the month of August. Hot, arid winds lifting off the Sahara Desert in North Africa brought scorching temperatures and a thin dusting of yellow sand that covered Montalcino. These winds forced a sudden and uncontrolled spike in temperatures that left vintners in a precarious position.

"We thought 2011 could be better than 2010," says Andrea Cortonesi of Uccelliera in Castelnuovo dell'Abate. "That was until the beginning of August and suddenly everything changed." Prominent aromas of ripe raspberry and strawberry characterize the vintage, he says. Those who did not use stringent temperature control in the winery may have had issues with overripe and jammy fruit.
